About Me

I’m Thomas O’Byrne. Welcome to my site!

I grew up in Texas where the family farm was located “smack dab” in the middle of the oil patch in Gregg and Upshur counties (ever heard of the Gilmer field?). We have had operating oil and gas wells on the place since the 1930’s  being just miles from the original “gusher” named “The Daisy Bradford” developed by Marion “Dad” Joiner in the original East Texas oil boom. I like to think of myself as an “East Texas Oil Baron” as the family still receives royalties on wells we have an interest in.

I have a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Texas – Arlington, and I’m a licensed and current Certified Public Accountant. I am also an Accredited Petroleum Accountant . My first experience in Oil and Gas accounting started when I worked for a small CPA firm in Denver where I was charged with bookkeeping for a few small oil and gas clients, mostly drilling partnerships.

After spending some years in my own small business developing computer software, I worked as a consultant converting and implementing computerized accounting systems in small businesses. I was also involved in meeting the initial Sarbanes-Oxley compliance requirements for a large regional bank in Texas. I returned to the Oil and Gas industry as controller for a Houston based oil and gas start-up which was attempting to do well remediation and field repairs in Kazakhstan. It was a great experience as the folks I was working with were from upper management of a large international oil company. They really knew what they were doing and I learned a lot; especially about the difficulties of working in third world countries.  What an eye opening experience!

I spent a few years working as a financial analyst for a company that serviced mid-stream (refinery) operations all over the world, and then landed back in Denver where until recently I worked in the Internal Audit department of a publicly traded oil and gas exploration company.

I now am founder and managing director of O’Byrne Consulting Group, LLC, providing outsourced internal audit services, Sarbanes Oxley compliance, and other various audit services, systems implementations, and just cleaning up old fashion accounting messes in the petroleum extraction industry.

I’m APA # 190, having passed my eighth exam in May, 2013. This brings me to one of the reasons I’ve started this site.

There is not much information out on the Internet about the APA® Exam, nor education and career opportunities in the profession of oil and gas accounting. Further, there is a critical lack of material and help studying for the APA® Exam. I wrote up the study guides available on this site to help the folks that follow me through this process.

Any opinions you get on this site are my own (or that of other contributors). I am not associated with any particular educational institution or COPAS.
